There are different classes of ellipticals and they all come with different price tags. High end units of course are more durable and offer a smoother and natural movement and lots of electronics and programs to choose from.. "On budget" elliptical cross trainers on the other side offer less bell and whistles but they will also give you a good sweat and complete fitness training.
I personally prefer ellipticals that offer heart rate monitoring (wireless units are preferred as you are free with your movements), in order to better control every step of your work out and hear beat. I feel ellipticals can give you a total body workout and more calories burn in less time compared to other conventional aerobic fitness equipment. Handles allows you to train your upper body at the same time. Great tool!
The type of resistance control varies from the basic and pro gym models: Basic models have a knob that you turn in order to increase resistance while professional version adjust resistance electronically and integrating it in different fitness programs. They both get the job done, it all depends from the taste of the user.
Make sure you check the pedals are perfectly aligned and the handlebars are solid and the resistance is adjustable. When gliding on an elliptical cross trainer the movement has to be smooth and flawless.
