How do you select the correct exercise bike?
These bikes can be found in any gym around the world. Exercise bikes have come along way since their first inception more than 50 years ago. From the basic models to the most sophisticated available in the trendiest L.A. or Miami Beach gyms the exercise bike has always been part of a good routine workout. They allow you to train your legs and at the same time you can watch tv or read a book. Not many fitness equipments let you do that.
Lets start with the basic and least expensive models, and their pro and cons: Yes they are relatively inexpensive and most of them come with a caliper resistance system. What does it mean? A brake is applied to the spinning wheel giving resistance. The feel is not smooth and sometimes can be awkward especially at high resistance levels. The brake will wear out at a certain point so durability is an issue.
Air resistance bikes offer a smooth movement but most models have limited speed settings, good for the beginner or for rehabilitation.
Ok, now lets talk about the real deal: Magnetic resistance exercise bikes a.k.a. ergometers. These are the type of exercise bikes you find at the gym. Resistance is created by applying electromagnetic energy to the spinning wheel. They are very smooth and they come with a multitude of workout programs. Not cheap but that’s as good as it gets.
If just need to mimic a real bike to workout at home you don’t need to spend more than 500 dollars on it, while if you can afford it and want a complete fitness mate high quality ergometers are what you are looking for
IMPORTANT TIP:
Since you will be spending a lot of time on your new exercise bike or ergometer make sure that the seat is comfortable. You will tank me one day...
